Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God … (Romans 1:1). The apostle begins with a simple identification of his name. As a Roman citizen, his name was Saul. But he became Paul, the one who was radically transformed on the Damascus road. Years later the theologian extraordinaire of the early church identifies himself humbly and simply as Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ.
